Workshop Description
Learn how to combine your photographs with encaustic wax! Encaustic wax, used while melted, is an ancient medium that blends beautifully with photographic images to produce rich, unique hand-made pieces. This workshop is open to both first-time students and to students who have taken the fundamental workshop and want to expand their skills. The workshop will cover safety and basic techniques then will explore more complex techniques such as adding layers or texture. Intermediate students will explore additional ways to incorporate printed images into an encaustic piece and additional encaustic techniques such as adding mixed media items or carving into the wax. Each student will be able to make at least 3 small pieces (5x7 or 8x10) using their own photographs, and all supplies are included. Intermediate students are encouraged to bring previous work as well as small mixed media items or laser image prints. It is recommended to bring an apron or smock. Contact the instructor for more information, and a more detailed information email will be sent prior to the workshop.
Bring a bagged lunch.

BIO: All her life, Kathleen has been drawn to stories, both to narratives in the lives of others and to visual stories in her art. She started photography in a traditional darkroom including formal instruction and degree then moved into the digital era. She has developed her visual curiosity—depicting details and connections to share her vision. More recently, Kathleen has moved towards alternative processes and encaustic wax methods to combine elements into hand-crafted pieces with layers, textures, and words that expand her story-making. After she retired from teaching biological sciences at the college level, she began to teach art and photography classes. Her passion is to help students get the results they desire rather than to simply impart skills. Kathleen enjoys sharing her artwork and the stories behind the work; she is currently represented at two Florida art galleries. She competes at local and regional art shows where she has received numerous awards including multiple best of show awards, and her work is published internationally.
