Workshop Description (Limited to 12 students)

In this workshop participants will learn this simple and fun way to make decorative paste papers. Paste paper is one of the oldest forms of decorative paper used by bookbinders and can be found in centuries-old books.

They were easier to make than Marbled Papers, and less expensive, but just as exotic looking. Moravian women in Germany and Pennsylvania mastered the craft in the 18th century and their products were in high demand.

The distinctive qualities of paste paper are the creation of rich multi-layered patterns and designs, and Mixed media artists are finding new uses beyond the traditional book arts. This is a fun, fast-paced decorative art with its true nature seated within the realm of printmaking. As with monoprints, each paste paper is unique.

The class will begin with a meet and greet and brief introduction about the history of paste paper and an overview of the process, and then we’ll get busy.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of tools and techniques for creating one-of-a-kind paste papers to be used in bookbinding projects, art journals, collages, or other mixed media works.

We will end the day with a class discussion of the process and sharing session.
