Workshop Description (Limited to 8 students)

Students will be fusing unleaded, powdered glass onto copper, known as vitreous enameling. We will be using a small table kiln as well as some simple kitchen torches. This is a fun, fast paced class, and you will leave knowing the all-important basic steps that are the foundation of most enameling techniques. You will also have at least 3 samples that can be made into a pendant or earrings.

Supplies:

Since this is an introductory class, your teacher will supply the needed tools and materials, however it is recommended that you bring an apron and dust masks and wear closed toe shoes. You may also want to bring a metal cookie sheet or tray to organize your work space.  In some cases we will be sifting powdered glass, so the dust masks are a precaution against breathing in any of that dust.

If this is a refresher course for you and you want to use your own materials, please let the instructor know. We are using Thompson unleaded enamels and copper.

Bring a bagged lunch.

BIO - Mary Whittle studied illustration at Pratt Institute in New York (1967-68), graduated from the University of Central Florida with a specialty in drawing and printmaking, BFA (1986), did post graduate work and had a teaching assistantship at the University of Georgia’s Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. She was part of the founding members of the Florida Printmaker’s Association, and exhibited her etchings in galleries and shows in Central Florida until 1992 when she relocated to Tennessee. Mary remained in Tennessee for 30 years and was a member of the Southern Highland and Foothills Craft guilds. She also taught Art at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee, the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, as well as in her studio and to local art groups. In 2010 Mary contracted an illness that limited her ability to print for quite some time, so she took up enameling, a medium she had been introduced to at the Campbell Folk School. Her love of the medium directed her toward becoming a member of The Enamelist Society and studying under such well known teachers as: Ricky Frank, Merry-Lee Rae, Sandra McEwen, Marilyn Tendrich, Ruth Ball, Steve Artz, and Charity Hall.   Mary has been the recipient of many awards both nationally and internationally. She currently lives in Port Orange, Florida with her husband, Bob, and her dog Cinnamon.
