Workshop Description

This class will build on techniques from the Introduction to Photoencaustic class, with emphasis on encaustic methods. We’ll look at other ways to incorporate images into an encaustic piece such as image transfer, tissue paper prints, and gluing a matte photo onto the board. For the tissue paper prints, students will first build a background of 5-7 layers on a board including pigmented wax and patterns before embedding the tissue paper print and adding more texture. We'll explore adding texture with pigmented wax or plain medium to all pieces, fusing to keep the texture, adding layers to the piece, making lines or carving the wax, adding touches with oil pastel and pan pastel, and adding mixed media items such as threads or cheesecloth. Most supplies will be provided, and the instructor will print one tissue paper print and one matte photo print for each student.

Supplies:

Students are requested to bring their previous photoencaustic work and small laser prints for transfer. Optional supplies to bring include small mixed media items (handmade paper, alternative papers that are porous, feathers etc), additional wooden boards (either flat or cradled) beyond what are supplied, and alternative porous substrates such as unglazed clay or woven materials.

This class is designed for students who have completed the Introduction to Photoencaustic class or have similar encaustic experience. The instructor will send an informational email with more details before the class begins.

Cancellations must be made at least one week before the first day of class in order to receive a refund.

BIO

All her life, Kathleen has been drawn to stories, both to narratives in the lives of others and to visual stories in her art.  She started photography in a traditional darkroom including formal instruction and degree then moved into the digital era.  She has developed her visual curiosity—depicting details and connections to share her vision. More recently, Kathleen has moved towards alternative processes and encaustic wax methods to combine elements into hand-crafted pieces with layers, textures, and words that expand her story-making. After she retired from teaching biological sciences at the college level, she began to teach art and photography classes. Her passion is to help students get the results they desire rather than to simply impart skills.  Kathleen enjoys sharing her artwork and the stories behind the work; she is currently represented at two Florida art galleries. She competes at local and regional art shows where she has received numerous awards including multiple best of show awards, and her work is published internationally.
