ACRYLIC PAINTING: CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES

Course Objective and Description:
This class is designed for the novice or more advanced artist interested in either abstract or realistic ideas using acrylic paints and mediums. There will be an emphasis on composition, design, color and experimentation. Students can continue working on paintings they may have already started or begin a new series of related works. Various materials and techniques specifically related to acrylics will be covered along with demonstrations and ongoing critiques of paintings in progress.
Materials List:
1. Set of basic acrylic paint colors including titanium white, Paynes grey and an acrylic matt or gloss medium.
2. Assorted brush sizes
3. 2 quart size or larger containers for water
4. Wood, plastic or paper palette
5. Stretched canvas or wood panel 12 x 12” or larger
(Students may bring any acrylic paints and materials that they already have. Other materials and techniques will be introduced as the class develops)

Brief Bio for David Fithian
David Fithian grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida as a “child artist”. In 1967 he attended the Art Students League in New York. Beginning in 1968 he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA and went on to managed the Graphics Department at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA until 1980.
In the early 1980’s he taught photography at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida and for eight years a watercolor classes at the Maitland Art Center in Maitland, Florida until 1990. During the 1990’s Fithian Studios was in Eureka Springs, Arkansas as a commercial photography and fine art painting and drawing studio/gallery.
From 2001 to 2020 he was Curator of Art and Exhibitions at the Museum of Art – DeLand, Florida while maintaining a painting studio which remains active. He has continuously exhibited work in juried exhibitions and several one person shows over the years and received numerous awards along the way.
